Snowdown is a split-screen projectile-based game, set in an alternate post-apocalyptic world. The round-based gameplay encourages players to develop and hone their skills to become the superior Snowdown player.
"Wouldn't it be fun to have a snowball fighting game?" we thought, and so we started. Inspired by everyone's favourite winter-time sport, we created a simple yet fun little gameplay hook in a competitive, local split-screen snowball fighting game.
To justify a world which is stuck in perpetual winter, we decided that the setting would take place in a desolate, post-apocalyptic "Nuclear Winter", whereby the participants in the snowball fights are children, competing for the prize of food rations.
Keeping in line with the themes, we felt the best location for the arena to be in the courtyard of a housing bloc, similar to an almost 'Chernobyl-esque' aesthetic. This as well as the vast snowy landscape and dead trees really brings home the Nuclear Winter-Wasteland feel.
I still think a snowball fighting game is long overdue in the market. The potential for online multiplayer, a class system, various maps and locations, as well as variation in gameplay style such as fast and twitchy, or slow and tactical. The potential of this game idea, alongside its themes, would be something I hope to realize someday.
